Notifications and push

How the notification bell, its three tabs, muting and push notifications work for both streamers and viewers.

NextQuest tells you about activity in two places. The bell in the page header lists notifications on the site. Push notifications send a copy to your device when NextQuest is closed. This page covers both, for streamers and for viewers. Viewers can read the viewers section for the rest of the viewer side.

The bell

The bell is in the header whenever you are signed in. It has three states:

State Meaning
Plain bell Nothing new.
Bell with a dot You have unread notifications in a section that is not muted.
Crossed-out bell All three sections are muted.

The bell checks for new notifications every 30 seconds, and again when you return to the browser tab.

Select the bell to open the panel.

The three tabs

Tab Who it is for What it lists
Suggestions Viewers Your suggestions to other streamers: "accepted" or "passed on".
Board Streamers Viewers who suggested a game to one of your boards.
NextQuest Everyone News about NextQuest itself.

Anyone can have all three. A streamer is also a viewer on other streamers' boards.

The Board tab adds an entry for a brand-new suggestion. It adds none when another viewer suggests a game already waiting in your inbox. See Suggestions inbox.

Each tab shows every unread item first, then the newest read ones, up to 10 items in total. Unread items carry a New pill, and each tab icon shows a dot while it has unread items. When you switch tabs or close the panel, the items you saw count as read.

Names and game titles in a notification are links. A name goes to that person's board and a game goes to its game page.

Mute a section

At the bottom of the panel, a switch mutes the tab you are on. Its label is Mute suggestion updates, Mute your board updates or Mute NextQuest news.

A muted section still collects notifications and lists them, but:

  • They are already marked read, so there is no dot.
  • They make no sound.
  • They never send push notifications.

The panel notes that new items arrive silent. When you unmute NextQuest, news posted while it was muted counts as read.

How long notifications stay

NextQuest removes read notifications once they fall outside the newest 10 in a section, or once they are older than 90 days. It never removes unread ones.

Push notifications

Push notifications reach you even when NextQuest is closed. Each browser or device opts in on its own.

Important

You set up push on the Notifications page of the dashboard, and the dashboard is limited to invited streamers during the closed beta. Viewers who are not invited cannot open that page yet and get the bell only. See Closed beta and pricing.

Turn push on

  1. Open Notifications in the dashboard.
  2. Under This browser, switch on Push notifications.
  3. Allow notifications when your browser asks.
  4. Select Send test notification to check that it works.

You can send one test every 10 seconds. If you try sooner, you see "Wait a few seconds before sending another test."

The page tells you when push is not possible:

Message What to do
This browser can't get push notifications Try Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
Notifications are blocked for NextQuest Allow them in your browser's site settings, then reload.
Push notifications aren't available right now Nothing on your side. Push is switched off on the server.

iPhone and iPad

On iPhone and iPad, push only works once NextQuest is on your Home Screen:

  1. Tap the Share button in Safari.
  2. Choose Add to Home Screen, then Add.
  3. Open NextQuest from your Home Screen and return to the Notifications page.

Sections

The Sections block repeats the mute switches for Suggestions and Board. They are the same switches as in the bell. There is no switch for NextQuest, because news never sends push.

Devices

The Devices block lists every device that gets push, for example "Chrome on Android". Each row shows when you added the device and when it last received a notification. Select Remove to stop push on that device.

  • You can have 10 devices. Adding an eleventh removes the oldest.
  • Logging out removes the browser you log out from. Your other devices stay.
  • If someone else signs in on the same browser, push there stops until they opt in themselves.

What gets pushed

Push Title Text
A viewer's suggestion was decided The streamer's name "Accepted game" or "Passed on game"
A new suggestion on your board New suggestion "Game was suggested"

When several are waiting, the text ends with ", plus n more". Pushes for suggestions never name the viewer who made them.

A streamer's push opens the inbox. NextQuest does not send a push if the notification is already read, is in a muted section, or is older than 15 minutes. Push is a short alert. The bell keeps the full list.
